I'm a Disney travel agent and kind of an Walt Disney world addict...
We know Disney travel is not cheap, but I want to be there as long as possible on my trips. The best way I've found to take longer trips and keep my costs down is to stay in a value resort. There are currently 5 value resorts on Walt Disney World property (plus a campground, but I'm NOT a camper and camping on vacation sounds more like torture than relaxation to me!!). The Value Resorts are All Star Movies, All Star Sports, All Star Music, Pop Century, and Art of Animation.
All value resorts have a few defining features. They all are in the motel style, so they have doors that open to the outside. The theming is big and bright around the resorts. The rooms are fairly small. For the most part, these rooms sleep 4 people. The bathrooms have one sink instead of dual sinks in the higher tiers. The pools do not have slides. They all have a central building with check in and concierge, a food court, gift shop, and arcade. None of these resorts have table service restaurants. They all have one bus stop for the resort. These resorts all primarily use bus transportation, but Pop Century and Art of Animation will also have Skyliner (gondola) transportation starting in late September 2019, which is a really great upgrade!
The rooms are not overly fancy or luxurious, but they are comfortable and have some Disney theming. Pop Century and All Star Movies are recently renovated, and the other two All Stars will be renovated over the next few years. At this point, I would suggest staying at one of the renovated resorts, though the lowest prices will be at the other two All Stars right now.
Art of Animation, though it is in the value category, has the most expensive rooms in this category. There are two types of rooms in this resort. The Little Mermaid rooms are in the same style as the other value resorts. However, the Lion King, Finding Nemo, and Cars rooms are family suites. These rooms sleep 6 and have two bathrooms and a kitchenette. There are similar, though less themed, not renovated, and cheaper family suites at the All Star Music resort as well. The Little Mermaid rooms at Art of Animation are usually not as discounted as other Value resorts because of the extra theming.
I suggest staying in a value resort if your main purpose is staying on a lower budget and if you plan to spend most of your time in the parks. Even if your family is larger, you can usually get two value rooms for the same or less price of a room that sleeps more people. If you want to spend more time at your resort and your budget allows, there are plenty of great options at the moderate and deluxe resorts as well.
All Disney resorts, from the cheapest value resort to the most lavish deluxe resort, all have the same benefits as far as making advanced dining reservations and Fast Passes, access to Extra Magic Hours, complimentary transportation to and from the airport and around Disney property, free parking if you drive to the theme parks, luggage services, resort airline check in, resort activities (pool parties, Movies Under the Stars, crafts, etc), ability to use Disney Dining Plans, and complimentary Magic Bands, as well as wonderful Disney service! So, no matter your budget, there is a great option for your family at Walt Disney World!
